EEE Week 10

Studying Abroad

Introduction

In a society which needs English competence when it comes to successful life, most of the students think about going abroad. Therefore, I decided to investigate whether or not going abroad can be effective in improving English competence. The objectives in this research are singled out randomly in ELT class.

Method

The objectives are divided into two groups. The one group is people who have not been to abroad and another group is people who have been to abroad. For people who have been to abroad, there are four questions: how long they have been, why they went abroad, which skills they had improved, the reasons about the question before and thinking about going abroad again. For people have not been to abroad, there are two questions. The objectives in this research are singled out randomly in ELT class, and they are given research.

The period of being in abroad

According to research, the four people have been to abroad among eight people’s responses. Two people have been to abroad for a year and  the rest of them are more than four years. The other four students have not been to abroad.

Why they went to abroad

It seems to be that most of students went to another country for studying English and some of them went to abroad for travelling.

Which skill is improved

All students who have been to abroad think they have improved four parts of skill including listening, speaking, writing and reading as I expected.

Answers from people who have not been to abroad

All students want to go studying abroad for improving their English because they think that it will be an effective way to go.

Conclusion

Overall, all students agree with the fact that going abroad is effective way to improve their English skills as I expected. In general, the students who have been to abroad want to go abroad again for studying English.

EEE Week 6

“The Red Hat” is one of the poems that we learned during ELT class. Most of students in my class mentioned that they felt parents’ love while learning this poem. Three of  the students agree on two facts that this poem has good messages, and this poem has appropriate language for high school students. Due to these reasons, they would like to recommend it for high school students to learn.

According to their blogs, the poem has not only easy vocabulary but also grammar devices. Haein Cho writes, “Fortunately, the poet portrays the beautiful moment in the poem by choosing adequate words that most of students could understand without looking at a dictionary, Even some of difficult words in the poem could be guessed by students because they have specific background knowledge about the poem” (Cho, 2014.10.14) while Sangbum Na thinks that there are difficult grammatical structures, but somehow the most important parts has easy grammar structures to understand (Na, 2014.10.14). Also, Jieun Lee said that the vocabulary in this poem is good for learning the way of expressing emotions (Ji, 2014. 10. 08 ).

The three bloggers said that the message of this poem is suitable for high school students. According to Lee, this poem will make the high school students to remind of their previous memory (Ji, 2014.10.08). In Lee’s blog she writes, “The poem will remind them of their memory that they walked alone to school at the first time” (Lee, 2014.10.8). In addition, they agree that the poem give a chance to think about their parents’ love. Cho said “By reading this poem, students would be able to understand the emotion their parent goes through when their parents let them go and gain independence” (Cho, 2014.10.14).

To the bottom, the poem “The Red Hat” is suitable for high school students to learn. The poem contains not only good message but also appropriate language for them.

EEE Week 5 (Red Hoot)

Many high school students in Korea are under intense pressure to studying harder and harder because they should enter prestige University for getting a good job so that they always focus on their study. For them, there is nothing more than studying in their life. Even they do not care of their family anymore. From this situation, the poem, THE RED HAT, can remind the students of family’s love, especially parent’s love when the students learn this poem in their lesson. This poem talks about the moment when the parent lets their son go to school alone with a concern whether or not he can make it. This poem would be suitable for high school students to teach in the three points of view.

First of all, after the students learn this poem. the relationship with their parent will be better than before because the students can learn how much their parent loves them. In considering, then, they might start having conversations a lot with their parent. Building concrete relationship with parent will be helpful for students in different ways.

In addition, the languages, especially the vocabulary in this poem are challenging so that the students need to make an effort to understand this poem well. Even though this poem’s vocabulary are difficult, students’ vocabulary level will be improved after going through this poem.

Lastly, this poem will remind students of their warm memory they had when they were little because this story is about the moment that many students might have. Therefore, the students would understand this poem well with their experience.

As I have mentioned, this poem will be an appropriate material to teach for high school students in terms of making relationship with their parent better, learning somehow difficult vocabulary and feeling sympathy . If you are looking for some literatures for your class, I fully recommend you this poem.
